Located in the Coral Sea just off the coast of Queensland, Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system with over 2,900 individual reef.

It stretches for over 2,300 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s biggest single structure made by living organisms, so large that it can be easily observed from outer space!

The reef is not only a natural wonder and world’s landmark but a great touristic area with over 2 million visitors a year which generates from 3-4 million US dollars a year!

To get an idea of the huge size of the reef, if you get United Kingdom, Holland and Switzerland combined, the reef is still greater in size. Or compared to North America, it would cover half of Texas!

It’s not only great in size but also in the vast amount of biodiversity and living organisms that come or reside in the reef.

Can’t forget the birds feeding off the more than 1,500 different fish species residing in the reef: 215 different birds species visit the reef!

How can we take care of this beautiful ecosystem? Well, as we know climate change is one of the greatest issues we are facing in the planet today, and probably the greatest threat to the Great Barrier Reef!

Warmer Ocean temperatures put stress on corals which then leads to coral bleaching. Let’s stop climate warming to conserve the greatest coral reef in the world!
